How to Play Giraffe Chess

Giraffe Chess is an exciting new version of chess played on a 68-square board with innovative rules designed to eliminate draws and encourage results. It keeps the essence of traditional chess but introduces unique moves and strategies.

Basic Rules

  1. Board & Setup

    • The game is played on a 68-square board (different from the traditional 64).

    • Standard chess pieces are used, along with modified movement patterns for some.

  2. Unique Feature – The Giraffe Move

    • The “Giraffe” is the signature piece of this variant.

    • It moves in an extended “L-shape,” combining the Knight’s leap with an extra forward step.

    • This creates new attacking and defensive strategies.

  3. No Draw Rule

    • Unlike traditional chess, Giraffe Chess is designed to avoid stalemates or drawn games.

    • Every match concludes with a decisive result – win or loss.

  4. Objective

    • The ultimate goal remains the same: checkmate the opponent’s King.

    • With new moves and board dynamics, strategies are more creative, faster, and outcome-driven.

  5. Tournament Play

    • Official IGCF tournaments follow a standardized rulebook to ensure fair play.

    • Players are encouraged to adapt quickly to the unique piece movements and use them strategically.
